The Commonwealth Building is an historic building, originally built in 1948 as the first large commercial building to use a flush curtain-wall design, heat pumps for heating and cooling and double-paned glass. The Commonwealth Building is home to many architectural firms who recognize the significance of the Pietro Belluschi-designed structure. Six million dollars of improvements have been completed to date at the building. Some of these improvements include a renovated ground floor lobby, new HVAC system and updated common areas. At each stage, improvements were evaluated to determine how to best return the property to its proper grandeur as an architecturally significant building. In 2010, the Commonwealth Building earned an ENERGY STAR® label and is now working toward LEED®-EB certification. The Commonwealth Building is on the Tri-Met (bus) Transit Mall and the East/West Light Rail Line. The building is surrounded by restaurants, hotels and many services.
