“Vision Award for Leadership” awarded for the design, construction, and operation of Stone34
(October 12, 2018) — Unico Properties and partners—Brooks Running, Laird Norton Company, and Skanska—were recognized by Seattle 2030 District with the “Vision Award for Leadership” for the design, construction, and operations of one of Seattle’s greenest buildings Stone34.
Stone34 is the first commercially developed building, and second building overall, to complete the City of Seattle’s stringent Living Building Pilot Program. By meeting and surpassing rigorous sustainability benchmarks during a 12-month performance period, Stone34 has proven how privately owned buildings can deploy advanced green building features without sacrificing industry acceptable investment returns. The building has an ENERGY STAR score of 100 and has two LEED Platinum certifications: Building Design + Construction and Existing Buildings Operations + Maintenance. The 5-story mixed-use asset, delivered in 2014 by Skanska and designed by Seattle-based LMN Architects, was acquired by Unico and Laird Norton in 2014. The building also serves as global headquarters for sportswear giant Brooks Running.
From Seattle 2030 District’s press release: “It has taken a team effort from the design and construction to the operations of Stone34 to make it truly a model for sustainable buildings. The project participated in a variant of the City’s Living Building Pilot Program and incorporated a range of leading-edge features: hydronic chilled beams which provide more efficient heating and cooling; a phase change thermal energy storage tank; and rainwater capture for non-drinking purposes. After its first year of operation, a review performed by the International Living Future Institute confirmed that Stone34 surpassed its targets in energy by 15% and water by 27%. The building has an ENERGY STAR score of 100 and has two LEED Platinum certifications.”
Congratulations to all the honorees!
