Real estate investment firm partners with The Best Bees Company to launch beekeeping on property
BOULDER, Colo. (September 30, 2019) – Something new is buzzing at one of Unico’s most historic properties on Boulder’s Pearl Street. Through a new partnership with The Best Bees Company, the Citizens National Bank Building at 1426 Pearl St. has a newly installed and professionally kept beehive on its roof.
The Best Bees Company is a full-service beekeeping operation that delivers, installs and manages beehives in select markets to bring new pollinator habitats into the local community. Unico’s partnership with the company was initiated just in time to celebrate Boulder Pollinator Appreciation Month.
Pollinators have a large impact on local ecosystems, and as property owners, we have a responsibility to do what we can to protect and enhance Boulder’s natural landscape.
The City of Boulder recently launched the Boulder Pollinator Garden Project to encourage the creation of high-quality pollinator habitats throughout Boulder on public and private properties. Recognizing the vital connection between bees and the environment, Unico is currently assessing expanding its beekeeping initiative to its additional properties in Boulder and other markets.
“With our growing Pearl Street portfolio, Unico is heavily invested in the overall health and sustainability of the Boulder community,” said Unico Vice President and Regional Director Austin Kane. “Pollinators have a large impact on local ecosystems, and as property owners, we have a responsibility to do what we can to protect and enhance Boulder’s natural landscape.”
The Best Bees Company will regularly maintain Unico’s beehive, using it to gather data to analyze and improve local bee health. More than five pounds of honey is expected to be generated in the hive’s first year.
The beehive box was hand-assembled with high-quality pine, all-natural wax foundation and a flat roof with a galvanized aluminum casing. The Best Bees Company works exclusively with Italian honeybees, known for their docile nature. Each beehive holds one queen and matures to up to 80,000 bees at the height of the season.
There are many benefits to owning a honeybee hive. Bees and other pollinators in the U.S. help to pollinate more than 70 different fruit and vegetable crops, worth over $15 billion to the nation’s annual economy, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Best Bees’ proprietary software allows the company to track data from all its hives, which it shares for analysis with its affiliated nonprofit, Urban Beekeeping Laboratory and Bee Sanctuary Inc. Learn more at http://www.bestbees.com/
